Adrienn Sarkadi, Emese Vaszita, Mária Tolner and Katalin Gruiz

In situ screening of toxic metals using the Niton portable XRF analyser allows rapid, non-destructive multi-element assessment. With this equipment, it is easy to profile contaminant levels and to determine the extent of the site, where remediation is needed. This article gives basic information on the equipment; discusses the statistics of the analysis; and introduces some in situ applications.

Key words: efficient environmental management, in situ decision-making, in situ soil analysis, metal content of soil and solid waste, pollution delineation, pollution delineation and mapping
